What is a Paediatric Dental Check

Dental care for kids is important from about 1 year of age. Keeping your child in good dental health will often help in developing strong healthy teeth and gums, which would prevent a list of dental and health issues in later life.

Why does my child need to visit the dentist?

Depending on the child’s age, a visit may include a full examination of teeth, gums, jaws, bite and soft tissues to check for growth and development. Regular visits allow the dentist to closely monitor a child for normal tooth development and eruption, and bite discrepancies.

What will be done during my child’s dental visit?

During a child’s dental visit, the dentist will orientate the child by introducing the treatment room, equipment and tools in a fun and non-threatening way. Behavior management may include a “tell-show-do” approach, so that the child is not surprised by the new experience.

How do I prepare my child for their first dental visit?

Parents can prepare their child for their first dental visit by not passing their own fear (from their own negative childhood experience) to their child. Do not use dental visits as a threat for misbehavior, or the use of negative connotations or words like “pain” prior to the visit.

Children are best seen in the mornings when they are well rested, and not before or after nap times. Your child could be prepared ahead by being shown books and cartoons that depict a fun trip to the dentist.

Above all, be positive about the visit. Finally, the worst time for a child’s first visit to the dentist is when he/she is in pain. So do not wait for this to happen before bringing your child to the dentist for an examination. Prevention is really better than cure, especially for a young child!

FISSURE SEALANTS

What are Fissure Sealants

Fissure sealants are a non-invasive treatment to prevent and arrest the progression of dental decay on molar teeth.

Why does my child require fissure sealants?

Fissure sealants are a type of specialized resin to prevent dental decay. They are usually used in the back molar teeth that have deep fissures (“valleys” of a tooth surface) in a child (or even adults) who have a high risk of developing dental decay. They prevent food from lodging in the fissures that are not reachable with toothbrushing, thus preventing tooth decay.

How long do fissure sealants last?

They are long-lasting (typically 5-10 years) and can be reapplied if they dislodged. Their lifespan depends on how they are treated, and their wear and tear. They cannot be done on filled teeth.

How are fissure sealants placed?

Fissure sealants are painless to do and non-invasive. The tooth is cleaned and the surface conditioned before the sealant is applied, and set with an LED-light source. Not every child is suitable for fissure sealant treatment, as moisture control during treatment is crucial to the success of the sealant. Your dentist will advise you on your child’s suitability.
